Tchaikovsky had not written music for ballet ever before when he accepted the project of the Imperial Theaters in Moscow to perform Swan Lake, because "I needed money, and had long wanted to try to compose such music. The most popular ballet of all time was released in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, and was a resounding failure. The success did not come until 1895, when it represented a new version, signed by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petisa at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg. Success, however, Tchaikovsky never see, because he had died two years earlier. The work, in the form of fairy tale, tells the story of impossible love between Prince Siegfried and Odette, a young queen turned into a swan with his court by the evil Von Rothbart's spell. She regains her human form only at night and can only be released from the spell for someone who swore eternal love. To compose the work, Tchaikovsky made use of fragments of other works: a ballet based on a German legend (hence the name) and excerpts of his operas remodeled Odin and the Voyevoda.
