The action takes place in a German city where the wealthy Stahlbaum family prepares to celebrate Christmas Eve, their children, Clara and Fritz have fallen asleep while the parents decorate the Christmas tree and gifts placed underneath. The children wake up and are impatient with the party that will give their parents once guests arrive and all are surprised at the sight of the illuminated tree.
